Garfield Recreation Center

The Recreation Center with the Ramapo College of New Jersey hosted the unique Ramapo and Meadowlands Survival (RAMS) Camp. The program was to prepare students to use physical activity, conditioning of the mind and healthy eating habits to survive in any environment.

Forty-five students, teachers and nurses from the Garfield School District participated in the project which was modeled after team survival camps. The students were divided into teams and competed for first place in challenges such as “Rate Your Plate” and “RAMS Survival March”, a three mile scavenger hunt.
Visit the Center for Environmental and Scientific Education website or the RAMS Camp website for more details.
The Garfield Wii Project was also held at the Recreation Center. It was designed to use technology as a means to get children physically active. The program was to test how well technology was received by the children and how useful of a tool “health gaming” is. Visit the Garfield Wii Project website for additional information.
